Real-time Battery Electrode Slurry Quality Monitoring

June 9, 2026

Introduction

Battery manufacturing requires consistent material quality and precise process control across electrode production. As battery production scales, traditional sampling and laboratory testing can leave operators without continuous visibility into slurry properties during mixing, storage, coating, and cell filling.

This article presents an approach for real-time monitoring of battery electrode slurry quality using inline viscosity and density measurement, helping manufacturers move from periodic sampling toward continuous process data and quality control.

About the Publication

The article examines the challenges of monitoring electrode slurry throughout the battery manufacturing process. Current methods often depend on manual sampling and desktop laboratory measurements, creating gaps between measurements and limiting real-time visibility into changes in slurry properties.

The proposed approach integrates Rheonics inline viscosity and density sensors into key stages of production to provide continuous process data and support a more unified quality-control strategy.

Key Findings

The publication identifies several limitations of conventional slurry quality control:

  • Manual and sampling-based measurements provide only intermittent visibility into slurry conditions.
  • Operators may lack real-time information about slurry homogeneity and stability during mixing and storage.
  • Predetermined coating settings can operate without continuous verification of slurry properties.
  • Periodic laboratory testing can make it difficult to detect process changes between samples.
  • A unified measurement system can provide quality data across multiple stages of battery production.
  • Inline viscosity and density measurements can support process monitoring from slurry preparation through coating and cell filling.

Rheonics Relevance

The publication demonstrates the application of Rheonics SRV inline viscometers and SRD density and viscosity meters for battery electrode slurry quality monitoring.

The sensors can be implemented at different stages of the production process, including:

  • Raw material receiving and quality control
  • Cathode and anode slurry mixing
  • Slurry storage and transport
  • Electrode coating
  • Electrolyte dispensing and cell filling

By providing continuous viscosity and density data, Rheonics technology can complement existing QA/QC, LIMS, ERP, and process-control systems, helping manufacturers establish a more connected approach to slurry quality monitoring.
