CRYO-DVT

High accuracy simultaneous Density and Viscosity metering for Cryogenic Fluids

  • One probe for density, viscosity and temperature of cryogenic fluids.
  • EX certified for explosive atmospheres down to -200 °C (-328 °F).
  • Hermetically sealed for complete submersion in the tank.
  • Purpose built for LNG tanks, terminals and transfer lines.

CRYO-DVT Overview

CRYO-DVT is a single, hermetically sealed probe that measures the density, viscosity, and temperature of liquefied natural gas and other cryogenic fluids directly in the tank or line, at temperatures as low as -200 °C (-328 °F). It was the first LNG density probe to achieve EX certification for operation at -200 °C, so it can be installed inside LNG equipment and in the explosive atmospheres around it.

Continuous, real-time density data lets terminal and storage operators detect stratification inside a tank and act before it develops into a rollover event. It can be mounted on a retractable system to build a density profile through the full depth of the tank.

The CRYO-DVT is made of full Titanium Grade 5 material, and thanks to its Balanced Torsional Resonator technology (BTR) is unaffected by external vibrations, which makes it perfect for any harsh condition and environment.

Operating principle

CRYO-DVT uses a balanced torsional fork resonator with flattened tine ends, immersed in the fluid. The more viscous the fluid, the more the resonator is damped; the denser the fluid, the lower its resonant frequency. Rheonics’ proprietary algorithms calculate density and viscosity from these two values.

The coupled resonator design keeps the transducer perfectly balanced and mechanically isolated from its mounting. Rheonics’ gated phase-locked loop electronics track damping and frequency, giving stable, repeatable readings across the full range of temperatures and fluid properties.

CRYO-DVT Applications

Density in cryogenic environments

Accurate density, viscosity and temperature at -200 °C (-328 °F), from a probe certified for explosion safety in and around LNG equipment. Install it in tanks, fixed or retractable, and in transfer lines.

Stratification and rollover prediction

Real-time density in the tank reveals layering as it forms, giving operators the early warning they need to forecast and prevent potentially catastrophic rollover events.

Density profiles with retractable systems

Lowered through the tank on a retractable system, CRYO-DVT measures density at each depth to build a complete profile. It integrates into existing retractable systems.
